The Art and Science of Putting

[Page 1] [Page 2] [Page 3]

Putting Grip:

Your putting grip should include the following:

  1. Both thumbs on top of the putter grip. This is facilitated by having a flat top putter grip.
  2. Line formed between thumb and palm of left hand turned to left of center.
  3. Line formed between thumb and palm of right hand turned to the right of center.
  4. Finger grip as opposed to palm grip.
  5. Very light gripping pressure.

Position:

  1. Stand very close to the ball. Ball directly under eyes without having to lean forward.
  2. Position ball to left of mid-line.
  3. Narrow stance.
  4. Consciously relax jaw, shoulders and grip pressure.

Stroke:

  1. Low, slow, long backswing with firm wrists.
  2. Low, slow, long followthrough with firm wrists.

Barometer of Improvement

Increased distance without increased perceived effort.

Great putters use less effort to move the ball a given distance because they roll the ball better.

A ball that is moving slower and with the proper rotation will hunt the hole instead of lipping out.
