Bob Writes To Tom Lehman And Fred Couples

Dear Fred and Tom,

One of the interesting things about ones golf swing is its constant evolution. In ways that are often quite small, ones golf swing is either getting better or worse. It never stays the same for long periods of time. This reflects changes in physical condition, attitude or an outright decision to change.

Fred, your swing has gotten better recently. You're standing closer to the ball and the funny looking manipulation at the top of your backswing has miraculously disappeared. Congratulations!

Tom, your news is not so good. You've moved further away from the ball and your shot pattern is not as consistent. It also appears to me that you've gained weight.

As players age and gain weight they tend to stand further from the ball. Even if you do not reduce your weight you should move closer to the ball.

I'd successfully struck about a million good golf shots and instructed at least that many players by video and television before it fully impacted me how vital it is to stand close to the ball. The reason is very simple, Tom, when you stand close to the ball there is a natural inclination of the club to go straight back and forth along the intended path.

Conversely, when you stand too far from the ball the inclination of the club is to swing around the body. When this happens the re timing that is required to hit the ball straight is so elusive that the result is inconsistent play.

Tom, if you would like to discuss this in more detail please give me a call.

Golfingly Yours,
Bob Mann
