Question from Alan: Swing Weight
Dear Alan:
If there was any magic in lead tape, all of us who manufacture
golf clubs would use it. If there was magic in increasing head weight
we would build heavier headed clubs. Tournament players have been fiddling
around with lead tape since at least the 1950's when I as a teenager
went out and played the winter tour with my friend Jon Gustin. We spent
our time adding lead tape because it was cheaper than eating, and it
kept our mind off of being hungry. Today the touring pros do it in
an effort to fine tune the weight rather than increase it. If you had
a set of clubs built with swing weights slightly on the light side
(perhaps around C6 or C7) you would have the option of fine tuning
by gradually adding weight until you found the set up that works best
for you.
Another reason that the touring pros may be using lead
tape is because they are really using my clubs and are trying to cover
the logo.
If you can locate some kryptonite tape, you might add distance,
but it will behoove you to remove it if your hair begins to glow in
the dark.
Golfingly Yours,
Bob Mann
