Question from Tim: Club Speed
Dear Tim: As
fast as possible.
A friend
of mine asked Mario Andretti how fast he drove to win a race. His
answer "as slow as possible."
Now, the more serious answer to your question.
I'm not certain that clubhead speed is the biggest factor in achieving
distance. I do not achieve great clubhead speed yet I hit the ball
a long way. There are many other issues including angle of attack
and proper use of the large muscles of the body.
All other factors being equal, it seems
to make sense that greater clubhead speed will produce greater distance.
But if the clubhead speed is created at the expense of firmness through
the impact zone, the added speed will be counter productive.
Other tips for increasing your distance:
- Tee the ball higher.
- Tee the ball further to the left in your stance.
- Switch to an overlength graphite shafted driver.
My next news letter will deal totally with
the issue of distance. I'll be posting it soon.
Golfingly Yours,
Bob Mann
