Question from Paul: 5 Iron Pitching

Dear Paul:

The safest shot is the lowest shot that the terrain will permit. If you loft the ball over  terrain that would throw it off line, with a five iron, use it. If not, consider a six or  seven before reaching for an eight or nineiron or wedge etc.

The flatter the face (less loft), the greater the margin of error. When you use a higly lofted  club you might blade it or hit it fat.

As your level of skill increases you will want to learn how to hit the wedge low and running as  well as high and soft. Ask me about this next time you write.

Golfingly Yours,
Bob Mann
