Question from Mike: Approach Shots

Dear Bob:

There seems to be a hole in my bag... I can work my wedge anywhere from short to 100 yards, and my 9-iron from 110-120 yards; but I seem to have trouble reaching shots between 100 and 110 yards. Wedges fall short and 9-irons fly the green.

Dear Mike:

Choke down your grip on your nine-iron and / or aquire another wedge with less loft.

The suggestion to carry a stronger wedge is at least somewhat in jest. The real solution is the one that I use, which is the same as the touring pros use.

Learn how to "work" your nine-iron. This includes learning how to hit shots with a slower tempo as well as shots with a 3/4 swing and shots hit with the club choked down an inch or so.

When I play, I usally only carry four or five clubs as I love to walk and caddies aren't available and I don't want to carry a full bag. Also, I enjoy the game more when I use a limited number of clubs to hit a large variety of shots.

Golfingly Yours,
Bob Mann
