Question from Bill: Shaft Materials

Dear Bob:

Which club shaft would be better for a weekend golfer that does not hit long but straight: graphite or steel and why?

Dear Bill:

Graphite for sure. Because graphite is lighter than steel the club can be longer while still maintaining an appropriate swing weight (head to grip balance relationship). Graphite is easier on your body and propels the ball further.

Almost all the top touring pros are using graphite shafts in their drivers, some have switched to graphite in their irons. The reason the remaining players are not using graphite in their irons is their concern about torque. However, we must recognize that constant play combined with genetic ability enable those guys to generate levels of power that make torque a consideration for them but not for 99.9% of all golfers.

Golfingly Yours,
Bob Mann
