Question from A.J.: Using Irons

Dear Bob:

In general, I am very good with my irons up to 4. When I hit my 2 or 3 iron, I rarely hit a pure shot unless I dramatically slow down the swing. At that point, I can hit it pure and straight, but am getting the same distance as my 4-iron. Should I keep the 4 with its higher trajectory and ditch the 3 and 2 irons? Or keep both in my bag to play on windy days?

Dear A.J.:

This apparently true story is so old that it may be new again. Lee Trevino said that "During a lightening storm, the only club he holds onto is a one-iron because, only God can hit a one iron". The two and three irons aren't a whole lot easier for most people. My suggestion is that you carry some lofted fairway woods instead.

Golfingly Yours,
Bob Mann
