Question from Tracey: Club Sizes

Dear Bob:

What size person (specifically height) are standard clubs designed for? I would assume the average golfer stands around 5'10". I stand 5'7" and have a pretty good stance (knees slightly bent, slight bread at the waist). How much shaft would I need to trim to get the proper fit from a standard set of clubs?

Dear Tracey:

To the extent that there is any issue of club length relating to height, it is more related to the distance from your hands to the turf rather than it is your overall height. Many short players successfully use over-length clubs. Many tall players use standard length clubs.

Aside from the issue of your hands to the turf, there are other issues. How far do you stand from the ball? What is the angle between your arms and the club shaft in your starting position? This having been said, I always recommend using maximum length clubs because you can always choke them down a bit.

Golfingly Yours,
Bob Mann
