Question from Alan: Ball Position

Dear Bob:

Does it matter where you put the ball in your stance? Should the ball move closer to your back foot with the higher lofted clubs?"

Dear Alan:

The fore and aft ball position question relates two different issues:

    A) The relationship of the ball to the feet.
    B) The relationship of the feet to the ball.
         (This is not double talk.)

When you lower the club properly as demonstrated on the Automatic Golf Videos, the ball will be positioned about two inches to the right of your left heel. However, as the shots get shorter, you move your right foot forward towards the ball. In addition to narrowing the stance this also moves the ball closer to your right foot and therefore it appears that the ball is further back in your stance.

Alternately, you can reposition the ball fore or aft without changing your stance. This is done to adjust the height of ball flight. When you move the ball to the right, the ball will fly lower. Move it to the left and the ball will fly higher.

The answer to your specific question is: Move your right foot up forward towards the ball with your shorter irons instead of moving the ball back in your stance.

Golfingly Yours,
Bob Mann
