Question from Charles: Putting Path
Dear Charles: The
short answer to your question is absolutely yes. The important issue
is how to achieve this naturally and automatically.
When you are putting you must stand
close enough to the ball that your eyes are directly over the ball.
If you do this, the putter will naturally tend to move straight back
and forth along the proper line with a square face.
Most golfer, perhaps as many as 90% including
touring pros, stand too close to the ball when putting. Because of
this one of two things tends to occur.
1. The putter moves around the body rather
than straight back and through and the putter face is not kept square
throughout the stroke.
2. The golfer is forced to artificial manipulate
the putter through the stroke to maintain a straight path.
The reason that
I manufacture my WHO-DINNI® putter
with a rocker bottom and the shaft affixed to the center of the head
is that it enables a golfer to stand close enough to the ball to
have his or her eyes directly over the ball without a concern for
stubbing the heel or toe of the club into the surface of the green
during the putting stroke.
As soon as you establish a proper starting
position and use an appropriate putter you will find that a straight
path and a square face occur easily and naturally.
Golfingly Yours,
Bob Mann
