Question from Foster: Putting Speed
Dear Foster:
The first edition of your free snail mail
news letter will feature an extensive article on the art and science
of putting, but now, let's deal with your immediate question.
Golfers who have difficulty with putting
distance, hit the ball with a bang rather than rolling it properly
with a smooth stroke. The more smoothly you roll the ball the less
effort will be required to move it a given distance. Once you smooth
out the stroke and optimize the roll, you will find that the right
side of your brain will take over the distance function and a favorable
result will be automatic.
Here are several tips for improving your
putting stroke:
1) Lengthen the back swing and the follow through and slow down the
pace.
2) Use a heavier putter. This will minimize your tendency to put an
incorrect "hitting" action into your putting stroke.
3) Make certain that your hands are not ahead of the putter
head in your starting position or at any time during the stroke.
4) Remove all wrist flop from you putting stroke. Make certain
that your neck is the hub of your putting stroke, not your
wrists. This will lengthen the lever and smooth out your stroke.
5) Line up your putts with the logo on the ball and practice
smoothly rolling the logo end over end without side wobble.
6) Make certain that the putter head stays low throughout the
back swing and follow through.
Golfingly Yours,
Bob Mann
