Question from Gerry: Pulling Shots
Dear Gerry:
Pulling and slicing are very closely related.
If you stand too far from the ball and swing over the top on the
downswing, you'll probably slice. If you stand closer to the ball
and swing over the top you'll probably pull the ball.
To correct the pull and slice do the following:
- Check your alignment. Make certain that you are
not using an extremely open or extremely closed stance. Lay a club
on the ground in the direction of the target and line yourself
up on every shot. Another method for assuring correct alignment
is to spot a blade of grass or some other distinctive feature ahead
of the ball along the target line.
- Turn your left foot out and flex your knees in
your starting position. Turning the left foot out will enable your
lower body to release laterally through the hitting zone. Flexing
the knees also encourages the proper lateral move with the lower
body. The slice and pull occur when the knees lock and the upper
body swings over and across the line.
- Most important. Turn your chin to the right and
make certain that you hold it there until after impact
Golfingly Yours,
