Question from Philip: Swing Path
Dear Philip:
A linear club path is unnatural only if
you are standing too far from the ball.
When you stand close to the ball and position
your hands low you will find that your hands are almost directly
under your shoulders. From this position is it very natural for the
club to go straight back. If you liken the arms to the spokes of
a wheel of which your neck is the hub, you will understand that if
the arms are draped straight down from the shoulders that the wheel
will turn in a path straight back from the ball.
If you stand too far from the ball the
arms are at an inclined angle and the tendency is to swing around
the body.
All the above is equally true in putting.
However it is easier to have a straight path with the putter head
because the shaft is shorter and the lie angle more upright. Therefore
you can not only stand close to the ball but you can and should have
your eyes directly over the ball when putting. This putting position
will virtually assure a straight back and through path.
Golfingly Yours,
Bob Mann
