Question from Chuck: Further Drives

Dear Chuck:

Other things being equal, high drives will go farther than  low drives. Therefore, if there were no other issues to be  addressed, you might get greater distance out of a driver  with 12 degree loft than your present 10.5 degree driver.  However, all other things are not equal. If you are playing  on a course that is windy and has hard fairways, you're  probably getting more overall distance and certainly,  greater control than you would if you hit the ball higher.

I get a lot of elevation on my drives even with a 9 degree  driver because I play the ball well forward in my stance and  I tee it high. My suggestion is that you make those two  adjustments and see what they do for you.

As for your comment that you close the face a little; I  don't know whether you mean in your starting position or  through the swing. A slightly closed face in the starting  position is far better than an open face. On the other  hand, if you are rotating the club closed through the swing,  you are probably standing too far from the ball.

Golfingly Yours,
Bob Mann
