Question from Paul: Club Lofts

Dear Paul:

To some extent, the distance that you will get out of a golf club can be manipulated by altering the loft. However, that is only one of the issues. Length and liveliness of the shaft are greater issues.

The principle reasons that the pros are getting more distance today, than in former years, are improved shafts, better golf balls, and improved fitness level of the golfers themselves.

Additionally, there is the mental factor. When one golfer sees another propell the ball a long way, he adopts the belief that it can be done and his mind tells his body how to do it.

A rule of thumb is to adjust the loft of your clubs based on the conditions of the golf course and climate. If you're playing on hardpan, in the wind, in Texas, you will want to reduce the loft of your clubs.

Golfingly Yours,
Bob Mann
