Question from Joseph: Lie Angle
Dear Joseph:
Another thoughtful and excellant question.
As you know from the TV show, I advocate keeping the hands low and
close to the body in the starting position. However, during the swing
centrifical force causes the hands to rise, therefore, the line from
the left shoulder to the club head is nearly straight at impact,
when viewed from the profile.
Because of this phenomina the toe of the
club head can be up in the air at the staring position and yet strike
the ball properly at ground level. For this reason people do not
need clubs as flat as they might otherwise think and overlength can
be used without undue concern for lie angle. Our clubs are about
4% overlength and this is not sufficient to require a significant
adjustment. We do engineer our club in it's totality. The head weight
and lie angle are considered as they relate to shaft length.
