Question from Wally: Leg Conditioning

Dear Wally:

Interestingly, your questions are very related to each other. When one's legs are active, supple and strong, the downswing tends to be inside to outside. When the legs are inactive the swing tends to be outside in.

The best exercise a golfer can do to improve leg and hip condition is the skater's exercise, it is done as follows:

  1. Assume a stance with your feet about double shoulder width apart.
  2. Grab your right wrist with your left hand.
  3. Bend over at the waist.
  4. Bend the right knee as you squat down on your right haunch and try to touch your right elbow to the inside of your right ankle.
  5. Move your arms laterally along the floor to the left as you squat on your left haunch. Attempt to touch the inside of your left ankle with your left elbow.
  6. Do numerous repetitions back and forth between your ankles.
