Question from Chris: Lateral Movement

Dear Bob:

I recently caddied for a Canadian Touring Pro in Vancouver B.C. When taking a break hitting balls himself, he let me hit a few balls and asked what I was working on, if anything. I have always had an over the top move and wanted something to help me. The first thing he noticed in my swing was excessive lateral motion with my lower body, specifically my hips. My slide towards the target caused my club to be pulled abruptly down. As long as I concentrated on keeping my left arm close to my chest I was fine but for the most part that didn't work. He had me concentrate on letting the right hip turn instead of doing my normal turn. It had immediate results in getting the club to the top comfortably. However here is my question... the lesson stopped there and I was left with my normal sliding of the hips toward the target. Is there anything you could share with me concerning the action of the lower body's movement in the downswing. I really feel lost... please help.
