Question from Mathew: Junior Golf

Dear Mathew:

The answer to your question is covered in my letter entitled Descending Blow. Hitting behind the ball (fat) is a result of swinging the club with the arms and hands instead of properly initiating the motion with the large muscles of the lower body. However, there are some issues that relate to you as a junior player that should be addressed.

Increase the strength of your major muscle groups. When I was about your age I improved my golf game considerably by training with weights. Older players risk reducing their flexibility if they overdue resistance training but junior players have an abundance of flexibility and often an insufficiency of strength.

Under supervision, you should learn how to safely and properly execute a half squat, bench press, "lat," pull down and alternate dumb bell presses, as a basic strength building routine.

As you get stronger and employ the large muscles in your golf swing you will eliminate the tendency to hit behind the ball.

Golfingly Yours,
Bob Mann
