Question from Dan: Taking Divots

Dear Dan:

If a light bulb was attached to a clubhead and a slow motion picture was taken in the dark, of various golf swings, we could observe three basic shapes for the golf swing:

  1. V shape. This is the worst swing. It results from the lower body being frozen, the club picked up with the arms and wrists and hacked down to the ball. This is otherwise known as the "killing the snake swing." The resulting divot is short, deep and usually to the left of the target line.

  2. Circular shape. This is a mediocre swing. The shoulders are more active. The hands are quieter but the legs are still under active. The resulting divot is shallower, longer and less to the left.

  3. Elliptical swing. Ben Hogan personified the elliptical swinger. Active legs. Shallow divots that fly straight ahead.

Golfingly Yours,
Bob Mann
