Question from Pete: Descending Blow
Dear Pete:
Striking
the ball with a descending blow is something that happens, not something
that you consciously do.
If you harbor the thought "hitting down on the ball," what
will happen is you will put a conscious "hit" into you
swing. This will cause you to cast the club from the top with your
right causing you to decelerate through the ball and likely hit it
fat.
Striking the ball with a descending blow
is something that happens automatically if you employ the proper
pre swing procedure and initiate your swing with your lower body
as demonstrated on my videos.
By initiating the swing with the lower
body, we automatically create a proper weight transfer to the right
on the backswing and to the left, towards the target, on the downswing.
It is the movement of the center of mass of your body to the left
on the downswing which causes the club to return to the ball at a
steeper angle than the path of the back swing. Thus, a descending
blow is struck.
Golfingly Yours,
Bob Mann
