Question from Polly: Backspin

Dear Polly:

Your questions remind me of one of the great anecdotes from the history of golf. Tommy Armour asked his teacher how to impart backspin. His teacher replied. "It's irrelevant, I haven't seen you get the ball up to the hole yet."

The rule of thumb is this. The longer the pitch shot, the more backspin you'll achieve. The action required to carry a wedge shot 110 yard produces more spin than the action required to pitch the ball a few yards. That is why the pros will often lay up to leave a longer approach shot.

When ever possible, run the ball to the hole. It's a higher percentage shot than lofting it up in the air. However, do be certain to carry over rough terrain before getting the ball down.

Golfingly Yours,
Bob Mann
