Question from Micheal: Automatic Golf
Dear Michael:
If you
keep your arms beside your chest instead of in front of your chest,
there will be no way for you to connect your hands to
the grip unless you bend the elbows outward. Although you do not want
to lock your left arm in a rigid position, you certainly don't want
it bent. As for the right arm, there is a slight bend, but it is downwarqd
towards the waist not outward.
The position that you are describing with the arms beside
the chest is the correct position for putting but not for hitting other
shots except when you are chipping with a putting stroke.
As to your comment that my method is a sure way to develop
the shanks, over 4 million buyers of the Automatic Golf videos over
13+ years, disagree with you. I have never heard this comment before.
None the less, if you are shanking with what you perceive to be my
method I owe you an apology for not conveying the method more clearly
in the videos. Hopefully this letter will clear things up for you.
Former
trick shot wizard, Paul Hahn Sr. was invited to give a demonstration
at the Masters many years ago.
He was so nervous
that he shanked the first several shots he hit, in front of a huge
gallery. He had the presence of mind to turn around to the gallery
and say "well there it is folks, a demonstration of the intentional
shank." The crowd laughed, he relaxed and gave a great presentation.
Jack Nicklaus shanked a shot on the 12th hole of the Masters
last year. He then pitched the ball over the pond. As I recall he saved
par. A shank is fairly close to a perfect shot because the sweet spot
on an iron is on the shaft side of center. Next time you shank the
ball congratulate yourself on hitting a near perfect shot and tell
your gallery that it was intentional. That's what I do!
Golfingly Yours,
Bob Mann
